For String Quartet

Solemn is a string quartet piece composed by Christopher Mesa. There is not a central musical key because it tends to change between sections. The first theme begins right at the beginning and the second theme appears as triplet rhythms. These two themes are the most prevalent as both shift into different variations throughout the piece. This eventually leads to a chromatic section which features syncopated staccato stabs that leads the piece to a downward descent. The piece then has a grand pause and the third theme begins. This theme begins at a slow, dreadful pace but gains traction and shifts to a faster tempo where it connects with the first two themes. This brings a more active use of polyrhythms, such as 8th and 16th notes over triplets. Eventually, it leads to the closing section which is a recap of the beginning. Throughout this piece, the melody either tends to stay in one instrument through a section or it bounces between the instruments in 1-2 bar phrases.
