For Piano

A Hidden Walk is a solo piano piece composed by Christopher Mesa. Since this was my first time composing solely for piano, my main focus was to concentrate on the rhythms rather than the harmony. Rhythms have always been my strength, so I used it to help compose my piece. Harmonically, I was focused on creating textures that sounded interesting and less focused on the key. There are two ostinato figures that are commonly present throughout the piece. The first appears right from the start in the bass voice. The second also appears in the bass as 16th notes after the first major section concludes. Throughout all the voicings of the piano, there will always be some sort of 16th note pattern. In some sections, the piano will be playing more chordal-like passages and in others it will be playing more rhythmically driven passages.  The use of polyphony and counterpoint helps these rhythmically driven passages.
